Frequently Asked Service Questions

When should students visit Career Exploration and Success?

A student should plan to meet with a career professional early in their Rutgers careers. We encourage students to connect with Career Exploration and Success during their first year or semester on campus.  Students can also engage with our office by attending the workshops and programs we offer. Based on a recent National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) survey the likelihood of students getting job offers increases with the frequency of career center use.

Can your office help with choosing a major?

Students can meet individually with a Career Development Specialist to discuss potential majors of interest. We have assessment tools that can help students explore and narrow career options. Assessment tools can provide helpful information to identify skills, interests, and values and how these relate to specific majors.  We work toward helping students make the most of their time and knowledge in making informed academic decisions.

What types of opportunities are available to students once they graduate?

Career Exploration and Success works with a wide array of employers interested in recruiting Rutgers students for internships and full-time job opportunities. To learn more about what our recent graduates are doing, review our senior survey results.

What should students do to prepare for successful futures?

The exact details may vary depending on your student's major and long-term career goals, but ultimately all students should complete internships during their time at Rutgers. Based on a recent National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) study 70% of full-time hires come from employers’ internship pools.  Students can also benefit from other experiential education activities such as volunteering, being active in a student organization, or gaining research experience to help them gain skills and build their resumes.

How can students find internships, co-ops, or full-time job opportunities?

Career Exploration and Success offers workshops, individual advising, career fairs, and networking events to help students explore potential opportunities and learn the skills necessary to compete for these opportunities. All students have access to Handshake, our online career management system that contains a database of full-time and internship opportunities.

Do you offer assistance to students interested in graduate school?

Yes, we offer workshops and individual advising to help students identify the resources available to explore graduate programs and decide whether graduate school is the right fit.
