In order to achieve career success and fulfillment, it’s not enough to have a long-term career goal, although that is also important. Short-term goals are the more manageable, immediate steps you can take that will help you achieve that long-term goal.
Simply put, goal setting is an organized personal planning process. SMART goals are specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic/relevant and time-based. Throughout your Career Journey, you will need to revisit and refine your goals.
For example, during the “Discover Yourself” phase, you may learn that you have a strong interest in leadership development. Think about how you can achieve the goal of enhancing your leadership skills as a student at Rutgers, in the short term (6 to 12 months) and the longer term (1 to 5 years).
